How do I silently install/uninstall the PAMS 4.0 Client edition?
PAMS 4.0/Demo PAMS 4.0 you will receive a download
link/CD containing the software.
Double click on the PAMS 4.0 setup file and the setup procedure will start. Follow the setup
procedure to install PAMS 4.0. Please Note: You will need to be logged into Windows as an Administrator user to allow you to install the software. If you aren't then Windows will block you from installing any software. Also please allow the entire PAMS 4.0 setup file to download before double clicking to install it.
If you receive the error message "‘could not write value application description to key verify that you have sufficient access to that key" then this is related to you not being logged into Windows as an Administrator user. To resolve, log into Windows as an Administrator user and then install PAMS 4.0.
PAMS 4.0 is developed and licensed to only install
and execute on standalone computers running
Microsoft WIndows. PAMS 4.0 should not be
installed or executed on any server, mainframe or
terminal service computer environment. If you do
require installation on a Server we also publish a
PAMS 4.0 Server edition. For more information see
the links at the top of this page.
PAMS 4.0 by
default installs in "C:\Program Files (x86)\PAMS
Assessments Ltd\PAMS 4.0". However you can change
this installation path during the setup process.
PAMS 4.0 is designed to work with Windows Local and Domain User Groups. During operation PAMS 4.0 will by default save all created files only into the current logged on user folder. The user can over-ride this and save files anywhere their Windows session permits them to. By default Windows will not allow Users to Read and Write data into User folders other than their own.
All user data is saved by default in the unique Windows path of their "AppData" folder. If you have the AppData folder redirecting to a network server then PAMS will see this and save to this location.
Users can save 7 different file types from PAMS 4.0. For information on the User data file paths see "Locating User Files saved in PAMS 4.0" below.
PAMS 4.0 requests an internet connection on startup only to check for updates to make sure the user is running the latest version of PAMS 4.0. We recommend users allow PAMS 4.0 to connect to the internet to make sure they have the latest version and to maintain integrity.

saving and printing is disabled.

To register please obtain your serial number by loading PAMS 4.0
and clicking on the "How to Register" button. Your serial number will be displayed at the bottom of that window.
Please then email this serial number to firstname.lastname@example.org and also stating your Name, Organisation, Invoice number & Postcode.
Soon after you will be e-mailed back a registration number which you need to enter into PAMS by loading PAMS and clicking on the "Enter Reg Code" button.
A blank worksheet will then
be created for you, of which you can print
If after having installed and registered you are having difficulties running PAMS, this could be for the following reasons:
1) If you are
finding PAMS is freezing a lot and the window
becoming un responsive, this could be due to your
computer not having enough resources to run PAMS
The minimum specification to run PAMS is 1GB RAM, 2 GB free disk space, Windows: XP/VISTA/Windows 7/8/10/Windows Server 2008/R2/2012 and a processor clock speed of 1Ghz.
Please note that the above spec is the absolute minimum required to run PAMS. For smooth running of PAMS 4.0, we however recommend the following minimum specification:2GB RAM, 4GB disk space Windows : Windows Vista/7/8/10 Windows Server 2008/R2/2012 and a processor clock speed of 1.5Ghz.
2) If you are finding PAMS is
freezing alot and the window becoming un
responsive, this could be due to you having too
many other software applications running at the
same time you are running PAMS.
To avoid this happening, please make sure you close any other software applications which are running, of which you don't need.
This will free up more memory and resources for PAMS to run more smoothly.
If PAMS is still running slowly or not at all we recommend restarting your computer (remember first to save any open files you require saving) and then opening PAMS.
By default in PAMS 4.0 when you
save a file this will be in the default folder
location under PAMS 4.0 in your APPDATA folder
(see "Locating user files saved in PAMS 4.0"
However you can change the default location by browsing to any folder on any drive you wish and saving the file. This will then become the default file saving location for that file type. You will need to do this for each PAMS file type.
NOTE: To change the default saving location for PAMS Report files, load PAMS and click the 'Report' button and then the 'Customise Report' button. You can change the Report saving file location in this 'Customise Report' window.
If you are using PAMS 4.0 and
are trying to locate your "I Need Help",
"Initial Screening Tool", "Observation",
"Worksheet", "Case File", "Parent Questionnaire"
or "Report" saved files, the easiest way to find
them is to load PAMS 4.0 and click on the menu
option "Manage Files". A drop down menu will
appear displaying the 7 file types described
above. Clicking on each file type will open the
"Windows Explorer" window showing the file
If you prefer to find the files manually then your files will be in one of the default locations below:
Windows 7/8/10 & VISTA:
"C:/Users/[Your Windows UserName]/AppData/Local/PAMS 3.0/"
or "C:/Users/[Your Windows UserName]/AppData/Roaming/PAMS 3.0/"
Please note the above file path
is often hidden by Windows 7/8/10/VISTA so you
will need to select "Show All Hidden Files" in
your Windows explorer settings.
Windows XP/2000 : "C:/Documents And Settings/[Your Windows UserName]/Application Data/PAMS 3.0/"
However if you changed the default folder path and navigated to a different folder to save your file, this can be found by doing a Windows Explorer file search for the following file extensions to reveal all files saved on your computer:
Worksheet file - search for ".wst" files
ii) Initial Screening Tool File - search for ".ist" files
iii) I Need Help - search for ".inh" files
iv) Observation files - search for ".obs" files
v) Report files - search for ".doc" files
- search for ".docx" files
Parent Questionnaire files - search for
- search for ".docx" files
vii) Case Files - search for ".csf" files
Please note that when saving files in PAMS 4.0, users should never save files in the 'System Files' folder. The 'System Files' folder should be used by the PAMS 4.0 application only for generating temporary files for internal processing. All files in the 'System Files' folder are deleted everytime PAMS 4.0 closes. Therefore users should never save any files in this folder. The 'System Files' folder will be in one of the locations below:
Windows 7/8/10 & VISTA:
"C:/Users/[Your Windows UserName]/AppData/Local/PAMS 3.0/System Files"
or "C:/Users/[Your Windows UserName]/AppData/Roaming/PAMS 3.0/System Files"
Please note the above file path is often hidden by Windows 7/8/10/VISTA so you will need to select "Show All Hidden Files" in your Windows explorer settings.
Windows XP/2000 : "C:/Documents And Settings/[Your Windows UserName]/Application Data/PAMS 3.0/System Files"
If you are encountering printing
problems in PAMS 4.0 then we advise you to check
all the points below:
vi) In very rare cases some printers may have problems printing from PAMS. Related symptoms are printouts being scaled either too big or too small. The cause of this is related to the default printer or printer resolution being changed before printing commences. A quick fix for this is not to modify the printer or printing resolution (from the default printer settings) before clicking the 'Print' button. If you need to print to a different printer or print to a different resolution then make this your default windows printer settings before clicking the 'Print' button.
PAMS 4.0 does not currently support Apple Mac OS X. However it is still possible to run PAMS 4.0 on your Apple Mac runnning on Microsoft Windows. If you have Windows installed on your Apple Mac then PAMS 4.0 will work on your computer.

This will upgrade any existing older version of PAMS 4.0 installed on your computer.
Any user created PAMS files will remain intact and will never be altered/deleted as part of the upgrade/installation process.
Below is the minimum spec needed to
install and run PAMS 4.0 Server, although the more
CPU and RAM you can provide, the better the performance.

No database is required
No third party software is required except Microsoft Word which is used by users to edit Report files generated by PAMS 4.0 Server.
PAMS 4.0 SERVER ADMIN FEATURES
PAMS 4.0 Server includes many admin features which can be configured for your convenience. To access these load PAMS 4.0 Server and click options from the main menu and then PAMS 4.0 Server Admin Settings. (You need to be logged into Windows as an admin user to access this option otherwise it will appear greyed out.) When prompted for a password enter the password specified in the PAMS 4.0 Server Seup guide.
The PAMS 4.0 Server Admin dialog window will then appear with 6 buttons relating to the following:
1) CONFIGURE BACKUPS - Automatic backup of all user created PAMS files saved to any disk location (network drive etc).
Specify a network folder where the backup
copies of all user created PAMS files can be
backed up to. We recommend specifying a UNC path
(rather than mapped drives) as the backup folder
needs to be visible to all users from their PC.
Backups are processed on closing the PAMS software for all files accessed that session. Backups files are saved inside a folder for each date and inside a subfolder for each Windows user. (e.g. backups/25-12-2015/user-dsmith).
Folder permissions on the backup folder you specify must allow ALL PAMS users read/write/modify rights. Otherwise users may face difficulty in PAMS saving backup files.
Depending on how many users actively use PAMS, you may find the Backup folder growing to a large disk size after a period of time. You may want to consider incorporating this backup folder into any routine tape/disk backup schedule you have (possibly occasionally removing files after your backup to free up disk space, if this is an issue).
2) SET GLOBAL FILE PATHS - Ability to set once the default disk location where all user files are saved in PAMS (network drive etc).
Specify a network folder where all PAMS user created files are saved by default. There are 7 file types in PAMS so all can be set accordingly. You may wish to create folders on your network for all 7 PAMS file types:
* Bold text in the examples above are the PAMS file types.
We recommend specifying a UNC path (rather than mapped drives) as the default save folders need to be visible to all users from their PC.
Tick the Append Windows
username checkbox to append a
folder (named after each user) to the
default path you specify. This is if you
would prefer to have the user's saved files
separated into folders (per Windows user) rather
than all into one folder for all users.
Folder permissions on all the default save folders you specify must allow ALL PAMS users read/write/modify rights. Otherwise users may face difficulty in PAMS saving files to the default paths.
Tick the Enable global default save file paths for all users checkbox to activate. When this is activated it will override any previous default save locations each user has set. It will also disable the Configure File Paths option (selected from the options menu), hence preventing users from changing the default save locations.
3) SET ADMIN MESSAGE - Ability to display message to all PAMS users on startup (e.g advice on using PAMS or IT support specific messages).
Enter a message you require to be displayed to all users when they load PAMS. This could be useful when alerting users to PAMS being unavailable for a specific date (due to maintenance) or advising users on saving/printing.
Enter a Start and End date when the message will be displayed to users.
Tick the Enable Admin Message checkbox to activate.
4) CONTROL PAMS 4.0 SERVER ACCESS - Ability to prevent users from loading PAMS (e.g for a brief period when IT support are applying upgrades or performing maintenance).
Tick the Disable PAMS 4.0 Server Access to All Users checkbox to activate.
Activating this will prevent all non-Windows admin users from loading PAMS 4.0 Server. Windows admin users will still be able to load PAMS 4.0 Server, even with this activated.
This feature may be useful to restrict
PAMS 4.0 Server access for a brief period, such as
servers being rebooted, upgraded, or disk
5) SET PROXY SETTINGS - Ability to set Internet Proxy settings (e.g. to allow PAMS internet access to check for updates).
PAMS 4.0 Server occasionally needs to check via the internet that the latest edition is installed. Thus it requires an active internet connection to do so.
Configure either the HTTP Proxy or SOCKS host details and click enable.
Select the Disable internet access check on software startup checkbox if you don't wish users to be displayed a warning when PAMS can't detect an internet connection.
Select the Enable proxy internet settings for all users checkbox to activate.
6) VIEW CHANGE HISTORY - captures details regarding when changes are made to the above settings.
A log dialog window is displayed detailing the Windows username, PC Name, Date and Time of every change that is made to any of the above PAMS 4.0 Server Admin settings.

This error message is caused because you do not have a default printer installed on your PC (in Microsoft Windows). To resolve this error please install a default printer to your PC Windows Operating System. After this has been done PAMS 4.0 will open correctly without error.

If you disable your Windows "SmartScreen" so PAMS 4.0 will install, we strongly advise reactivating it as soon as PAMS has installed. Windows SmartScreen is important for your PC's security.
This new feature allows you to set your screen resolution to maximum and then set Windows scaling to increase the display size (if windows appear too small).
